Zeitler impresses during Wisconsin Pro Day

The Wisconsin offensive lineman receiving the most attention this draft season has been center Peter Konz, who's considered the top prospect at his position. It was a teammate of Konz's, however, who was praised the most during Wisconsin's Pro Day yesterday afternoon. Guard Kevin Zeitler stole the show.

The Wisconsin pro day is complete and the star of the workout was guard Kevin Zeitler, who looked tremendous in position drills. The dominant run blocker showed terrific power in bag drills and easily moved about the field during motion drills. After his workout those in attendance used words such as "outstanding" and "beastly" to describe Zeitler, whose swiftly rising up boards. The Badger senior has locked himself up as a top-45 choice and there's a feeling he could slide into the late part of Round 1.

The 6-4, 314-pound Zeitler was a three-year starter at right guard for the Badgers. In 2011 he was named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association and Pro Football Weekly. NFLDraftScout.com has him ranked as the third-best guard prospect in this class, and states that he's  "a perfectionist. Zeitler expects more out of himself than anybody else possibly could in the class, in the weight room and on the field... According to NFL Draft Report statistics, he led college football with 142 knockdown blocks and had 33 blocks that resulted in touchdowns, obviously a major reason Wisconsin had a per-game average of 44.62 points and 467 yards, including 237 on the ground in 2011."

The San Diego Chargers will most likely select an offensive tackle or pass-rushing outside linebacker in the first round, but if Zeitler's somehow available in the second, general manager A.J. Smith could do a lot worse than selecting the Wisconsin mauler.

Meanwhile Konz, who's been San Diego's first-round pick at selection #18 in some mock drafts, is showing to scouts that he has versatility.

Peter Konz looked solid in limited action snapping the ball. There's a feeling in the scouting community the all-Big Ten center and his 6-foot, 5-inch frame can lineup at guard or right tackle as well as center.

Although Konz seems like a safe prospect to pick in Round 1, the Chargers need a more impact player at a position of higher need. With Smith likely to re-sign center Nick Hardwick, I find it unlikely that Konz will be San Diego's first-round choice.
