The New Orleans Saints failed to reach an agreement with quarterback Drew Brees on a long-term deal, so they placed the exclusive rights franchise tag on him today. Executing the move means Brees is not allowed to talk to other teams as he waits for the Saints to come through with the contract he seeks.
This is good news for those of us who want our San Diego Chargers to pursue Saints offensive guard Carl Nicks. Since Brees was hit with the tag, it's believed his cap number will be too exorbitant to allow New Orleans to sign Nicks to a long-term deal. The Saints are already spending a lot of dough on fellow offensive guard Jahri Evans; now it appears unlikely they'll do the same with Nicks.
With All-Pro left guard Kris Dielman retiring earlier this week, a hole needs to be filled on the Chargers' offensive line. Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego believes the Chargers are content with replacing Dielman with Tyronne Green, but one has to think general manager A.J. Smith will look into adding Nicks to fill the void. At least Chargers fans can hope that's the case.
