Preaching the importance of continuity, the San Diego Chargers made sure to retain center Nick Hardwick before he reached the free agent market today. Hardwick, who entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick with the Chargers in 2004, signed a three-year deal worth $13.5 million this morning. The move allows him to remain where he wants to be: snapping to quarterback Philip Rivers and playing for head coach Norv Turner and offensive coordinator Hal Hunter.
"It was going to be impossible to tell Philip, Hal and (coach) Norv
(Turner) I was leaving," Hardwick told
U-T San Diego's Michael Gehlken. "We just have put in so much
time in together. We're on track to do some good things here. I firmly
believe that."
Let's hope he's right. The Chargers have a lot of holes that need to be filled this offseason. This should be the first signing of many.
